ABHES | Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools - an organization that provides accreditation for health care programs. |
administrative skills | skills that help to manage the business affairs of a medical practice. |
advocate | one who assists the patient or acts on the patient's behalf. |
AAPC | American Academy of Professional Coders - an organization that supports education, networking and certification in the medical billing and coding areas. |
AAMA | a professional organization that nationally certifies Medical Assistants; Certification: CMA |
AMT | a professional organization that nationally certifies Medical Assistants; Certification: RMA |
appearance | outward or visible persona that a person gives to other individuals. |
behaviors | a term used to describe professional characteristics or attitudes that are expected in particular professions. |
CCMA | earned by eligible candidates that pass the certification exam through the National Healthcareer Association [NHA]. |
CMAA | Certified Medical Administrative Assistant - earned by eligible candidates that pass the certification exam through the National Healthcareer Association [NHA]. |
CMA | earned by eligible candidates that pass the certification exam through the American Association of Medical Assistants [AAMA]. |
clinical skills | skills that are an extension of the providers responsibilities |
CAAHEP | Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs - an organization that provides accreditation for health care programs. |
confidential | being prudent and conscious, revealed in confidence; secret information - especially in regard to speech. |
empathetic | put yourself in another person's shoes; think about what is best for the patient. |
general skills | the skills that are necessary regardless of whether one is working in a clinical or administrative capacity. They include legal functions, communication skills, the ability to deliver education and operational functions. |
generalist | medical assistants that perform both clinical and administrative duties in addition to general responsibilities. |
innate | characteristics that are inherent or natural, while other must be learned. |
knowledge base | a term used to describe the theoretical portion of an educational program. |
Medical Assistant | an integral member of a health care delivery team, qualified by education and experience to work in the administrative office, the examining room and the physician office laboratory |
multi-provider clinic | group practice, which consists of three or more physicians who share a facility for the purpose of practicing medicine. |
NCCT | a professional organization that nationally certifies Medical Assistants; Certification: NCMA |
NCMA | earned by eligible candidates that pass the certification exam through the National Center for Competency Testing [NCCT]. |
NCMOA | National Certified Medical Office Assistant - earned by eligible candidates that pass the certification exam through the National Center for Competency Testing [NCCT]. |
NHA | a professional organization that nationally certifies Medical Assistants; Certification: CCMA |
partnership | two or more physicians that have a legal agreement to share in the total business operation of the practice. |
patient-centered medical home (PCMH) | a team-based model of care led by a personal physician who provides continuous and coordinated care throughout a patient's lifetime to maximize health outcomes. |
provider | the person that oversees the patient's health care; often a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner |
RMA | earned by eligible candidates that pass the certification exam through American Medical Technologists [AMT]. |
scope of practice | principles of self boundaries of the profession. |
scribe | a person who documents data into the EHR as a profession and helps providers keep track of records. |
skills | a term used to describe procedures that are taught in an educational program or work setting. |
solo practice | when an individual provider/physician makes all the decisions for the practice |
tactful | being able to perceive a situation and know the right thing to say or do. Tact is especially difficult and important when dealing with ill people. |
team player | works cooperatively with a group of people |
time management | an assortment of skills, tools and practices used to manage duties during daily activities and when accomplishing specific projects. |
urgent care center | ambulatory care centers that take care of patients with acute illness or injury and those with minor emergencies. Used quite often when patients can't get in to see their own provider. |
