Battle at Marathon Athenian Victory - 25,000 Persians sail across to Athenians who only have 10,000 - Casualties: 6,400 Persians, 192 Athenians
Pheidippides ran 26.2 miles from Marathon to Athens to tell them that they won but also to warn them to prepare for war bc the Persians were gonna attack them next
How do you think the outnumbered Greeks (Athenians) managed to defeat the Persians? The Persians, who wore light armor and lacked training in this kind of land combat, were no match for the disciplined Greek Phalanx
Thermopylae Persian Victory - Xerxes and a quarter of a million Persians (250,000) march down coast to crush Greece - 7,000 Greeks including 300 Spartans blocked their way (stood their ground so the Persians would not be able to enter the city)
Ephialtes was a traitor= he originally was on the Greek side but then went to Persians and told them the secret passage way around the cliffs
Salamis - Themistocles said to the Athenians that they should fight the Persians at sea since they (Athens) had the best navy o Greek fleet positioned in a narrow channel near the island of Salamis  Greeks are victorious and sink one third of the Persians ships
How could it be argued that the 300 Spartans saved democracy? bc the Spartans held off the Persians at Thermopylae, that gave the Athenians time to prepare for the battle at Salamis. Had the Persians won that battle, Athens, along with democracy, would have been destroyed
: How did the Persian Wars affect the Greek ppl, especially the Athenians? The Persian Wars caused Athens to be the leader of an alliance of 140 city-states called the Delian League. Lastly, it produced confidence and paved the way for a new burst of creativity
