Legal Terms in Nursing Care

| Assault | Intentionally attempting or threatening to touch a person's body without permission. |
| Battery | Touching a person's body without permission. |
| Civil Law | Laws concerned with relationships between people. |
| Criminal Law | Laws concerned with offenses against the public and society in general. |
| Defamation | Injuring a person's name or reputation by making false statements to a third party. |
| Ethics | Knowledge of what is right and wrong conduct. |
| Fraud | Saying or doing something to try to trick/deceive the person. |
| False Imprisionment | Unlawful restraint or restriction of a person's freedom of movement. |
| Libel | Making false statements in print, writing, or through pictures or drawings. |
| Neglect | Failing to provide a person with the goods or services needed to avoid physical harm, mental anguish, or mental illness. |
| Negligence | Failing to act in a reasonable and careful way, and a person or the person's property was harmed. |
| Slander | Making false statements orally. |
| Vulnerable Adult | A person 18 year old or more who has a disability or condition that makes him/her at risk to be wounded, attacked, or damaged. |
| Will | Legal document that discusses distribution of property after death. |
| HIPAA | Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act - provides for privacy of health information. |
