Legal Terms in Nursing Care

TermDefinition
Assault Intentionally attempting or threatening to touch a person's body without permission.
Battery Touching a person's body without permission.
Civil Law Laws concerned with relationships between people.
Criminal Law Laws concerned with offenses against the public and society in general.
Defamation Injuring a person's name or reputation by making false statements to a third party.
Ethics Knowledge of what is right and wrong conduct.
Fraud Saying or doing something to try to trick/deceive the person.
False Imprisionment Unlawful restraint or restriction of a person's freedom of movement.
Libel Making false statements in print, writing, or through pictures or drawings.
Neglect Failing to provide a person with the goods or services needed to avoid physical harm, mental anguish, or mental illness.
Negligence Failing to act in a reasonable and careful way, and a person or the person's property was harmed.
Slander Making false statements orally.
Vulnerable Adult A person 18 year old or more who has a disability or condition that makes him/her at risk to be wounded, attacked, or damaged.
Will Legal document that discusses distribution of property after death.
HIPAA Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act - provides for privacy of health information.
