Biblical Writing

Literary Forms used in the Bible

QuestionAnswer
NARRATIVE a word that means story. This is the most common form used in the Old Testament
LITERAL LANGUAGE the true or actual meaning of words.
FIGARATIVE LANGUAGE uses images and comparisons to help the reader visualise the meaning
MYTHS a literary form that deals with the mysteries of life. It is used by biblical writers to communicate truths.
BIBLE The inspired word of God
PROPHECY a prediction of what will happen in the future
LAWS Legal material in the Old Testament which provides guidance and tells people how to live to serve God. Example The Ten Commandments exodus 20:13- 17
POETRY AND SONGS Especially found in the Book of Psalms, Job and Song of Songs. Examples include Laments, Psalms, hymns,
GOSPEL There are four Gospels written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each Gospel presents the life, death. resurrection and identity of Jesus.
LETTERS The most common literary form in the New Testament written to people/communities to address problems or issues in early christian communities
Apocalyptic writing Found in the Old Testament. It uses symbolic story lines to help you understand a crisis they are experiencing
Literary Form The language the Bible was written in
Parable a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.
Proverb a short saying, stating a general truth or piece of advice. Examples include It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.
Epistle a letter
Historical stories Stories of the Old Testament based on real events. Examples include; Exodus 14: 1 - 30 The Israelites Cross the Red Sea and 1 Samuel 16: 1 - 13 The Anointing of David as King
PSALMS a sacred song, hymn or poem, in particular any of those contained in the biblical Book of Psalms and used in Christian worship.
