Antibody-mediated immunity | Immunity as a result of B-cell action |
Antigens | Substance that triggers an immune response in the body |
Atria | Top two parts of the heart that receive blood |
Atrioventricular valves | Valves between the atria and the ventricles |
Cardiac cycle | One complete heartbeat |
Cell mediated immunity | Immunity as a result of T cell action |
Coagulation | Process of blood clotting |
Conduction myofibers | Fibers that conduct electrical activity of the heart |
Diapedesis | White blood cells squeezes through blood vessel to get to tissue spaces |
Diastole | Relaxation of the heart |
Endocardium | smooth, innermost wall of the heart |
Epicardium | Outermost layer of the heart |
Erythropoiesis | Process of red blood cell formation |
Erythropoietin | Hormone released by the kidneys that stimulates red blood cell production |
Granulocytes | Cells with granules within them |
Hematopoiesis | Blood cell production |
Hemocytoblast | A stem cell in bone marrow that produces blood cells |
Hemoglobin | A protein in blood that helps to carry oxygen |
Hemostasis | The control or stoppage of bleeding |

Leukocytes | White blood cells |
Macrophage | Large phagocytic cell in the immune system |
Megakaryocyte | Large cell made by a formation of platelets |
Myocardium | Middle layer of the heart wall |
Nonspecific defense mechanisms | Body’s ability to fight off all kinds of harmful agents |
Pericardial cavity | Small space around the heart that contains fluid |
Pericardium | Membrane that surrounds the heart |
Pulmonary circulation | Blood from the heart to the lungs to get oxygen, then back to the heart |
Renal erythropoietic factor | Substance produced by the kidneys that activates erythropoietin to produce red blood cells |
Resistance | Body’s ability to fight harmful agents |
Right lymphatic duct | Collecting duct that collects lymph from the RUQ of the body |
Semilunar valves | Valves that allow the blood pumped from the ventricles into the systemic and pulmonary circulations |
Specific disease mechanisms | Body’s ability to fight off specific harmful agents |
Susceptibility | Lack of resistance to a disease |
Systemic circulation | Blood from heart goes to the body, then back to the heart |
Systole | Heart contracts |
Thoracic duct | Primary collecting duct of the lymphatic system, collects from all regions besides the RUQ |
Thrombocytes | Cell that functions in blood clotting; platelets |
