QuestionAnswer
When did humans first arrive in the Americas and where did they arrive from? They arrived between 40,000 - 12,000 BC through the Bering Strait and were from northeastern Russia.
What were the Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest like and what was the region like? They lived in an area with plenty of resources in the forest and out at sea. They also held ceremonies called potlatches that were used to show the wealth of a family.
What were the Native Americans in the Southwest like and what was the region like? They had little land to farm and made houses into cliffs using stone or clay. They also had underground areas for religious ceremonies called kivas, used pottery to make baskets rather then weaving them, and traded with the Native Americans around them.
What were the Native Americans in the Southeast like and what was the region like? They often built mounds that were filled with stone and copper tools and would resemble an animal if you were to look at it from above. One group, called the Mississippian, also built a large village called Cahokia.
What were the Native Americans in the Northeast like and what was the region like? They had many different cultures and often fought over land. Because of the fighting, they formed alliances, with one of the most famous being the Iroquois.
In what ways were the North America Native American societies similar? They had many similarities like a similar religion, the belief that land could not be owned by humans, using totems to represent a clan or tribe, and used families for grouping people for political units.
Why were the North America Native Americans so similar? They were all connected through trade.
Where and when did Mayan civilization exist? The Mayans were located in an near the Yucatan peninsula and northern Guatemala during 350 - 950 AD.
How were Mayans governed? The Mayans were organized into many city-states, each with its own local king that was viewed as a god-like figure.
What did the Mayans discover and develop? They discovered the concept of zero, created a 365 day calendar, figured out the length of the year and was off by 0.002 days, and also create a writing system with symbols representing words and syllables.
What are possible reasons for the decline of the Mayans? They may have declined through overpopulation leading to a lack of good farmland, drought, constant warfare, overuse of natural resources, and losing faith in their leaders.
What was the social class structure of the Mayans? The upper class consisted of kings, highly skilled warriors, and religious leader. The middle class consisted of merchants and artisans. And the lower class consisted of peasants.
How did the Mayans preach their religion? They often would sacrifice blood or humans.
Why did the Mayans create a calendar? They created a calendar so they could plan the best day for certain events, like religious ceremonies or coronations. This is because they believed each god ruled a day, a month, and a year, and that their characteristics applied to that day.
What were some of the items that the Mayans traded? They traded salt, flint, feathers, shells, cotton, clothing, jade, jewelry, cacao beans, and food like corn, beans, and various types of squashes.
Where were the Aztecs located? The Aztecs were located in central Mexico in the Mexican valley. Their capital, Tenochtitlan, was located on lake Texcoco.
What was the civilization that preceded the Aztecs in the region? The Toltecs preceded the Aztecs.
What legend did they have that came to mind at the time of the Spanish arrival? One of the Toltec kings, Topiltzin, tried to replace their main warlike god with Quetzalcoatl. The king was then exiled to the Mayans and a legend was created that Quetzalcoatl sailed east and would eventually bring a new reign of peace and prosperity.
What was the Triple Alliance? It was an alliance between the three city-states of Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan, which would form the basis of the Aztec empire.
What was the Aztec social class structure? The upper class had the emperor, military leaders, government officials, and religious leaders; the class below that had commoners, which were farmers, merchants, artisans, soldiers, and farmers; The lowest class were slaves.
What was the religion of the Aztecs like? It was a polytheistic religion that needed human sacrifices so that the sun god could have enough strength to rise.
What were some of the technologies implemented in Tenochtitlan? Tenochtitlan had causeways that connect the cities and chinampas that were used for farming and for additional living space.
Where were the Inca located? The Inca were located along the Andes from Ecuador to mid-Chile.
What was the Incan economic system like? The Inca economic system was a welfare-state, where there was no money and little private commerce. The citizens needed to perform mandatory labor for the government called mita, and in exchange they were given benefits like help during crises.
How did the Inca treat their conquered people? They tried to win over their allegiance of their conquered peoples and often would ask a city to surrender before they attacked it. They also often used the leaders of the people they conquered to help govern their former territory.
What was the Incan language and how did they record information? The Inca spoke Quechua and had no written language. They also used a set of strings called a quipu to record information.
What was the Incan road system like? Incan roads were around 14,000 miles long and would be used for travel, transportation of information, and for military conquests.
How did the Inca worship their religion? They dedicated people for worship and doing tasks like sacrificing llamas, making beer, and leading worship. They also built temples, which one of them, called the Temple of the Sun, was located in the Incan capital of Cuzco and was covered in gold.
Why did the Inca fall? The Inca fell because of a brutal civil war, which heavily weakened the country, and then shortly after that they were invaded by the Spanish.
