| monks | religious men who lived apart from society in isolated communities |
| monasteries | communities of monks |
| Charlemagne | brilliant warrior and strong king who led the Franks and united many of the tribes of western Europe into a single empire in the late 700s |
| knights | warriors who fought on horseback |
| vassal | a lesser noble or knight who promised to support a lord in exchange for land |
| feudalism | a system of promises that governed the relationship between kings, nobles, vassals, and peasants |
| William the Conqueror | the French noble who defeated the king of England in 1066 and brought feudalism to England |
| manor | the large estate owned by a lord |
| fief | smaller estate owned by a vassal or knight |
| serfs | peasant workers who worked and lived on manor lands |
| Eleanor of Aquitaine | powerful ruler of a French region who became Queen of France and later the Queen of England |
| chivalry | the code of honorable behavior for European knights |
