How did Tang Taizong help develop the Tang Dynasty? (Lesson 1) Tang was able to greatly expand the empire and ordered armies to reconquered northern and western land lost during the Han Dynasty's decline. By 668, China was even influencing Korea with their advanced society.
What form of government did the Tang Dynasty restore from the Han Dynasty? (Lesson 1) With such a large empire to control, the Tang Dynasty needed to restore China's Bureaucracy with the civil system that allowed anyone who could past the exams be a part of it.
How did the Tang Dynasty go into a decline? (Lesson 1) Tang rulers had to heavily tax citizens due to the increasing governmental costs, but were still unable to collect enough money for other necessities. They also had trouble controlling the large empire, leaving Muslim armies to eventually defeat them.
What was the movable type and what was its importance? (Lesson 1) It was a group of blocks of metal or wood that each individually had a single character on it, which came together to form a full print. These could be reused continuously and made printing for scholar-officials much more efficient.
What was the status of women during the Tang and Song Dynasties? (Lesson 1) In the upper class, a woman's work was considered unimportant and unsuccessful compared to a man's. Peasant women worked in the fields to both produce their family's food and work all day for the money they earned.
How did Korea's geography affect its society? (Lesson 3) The Korean peninsula allowed for many new ideas and goods to come in from surrounding countries. However, it left Korea very vulnerable to attacks from those countries as well. The mountainous areas also limited the amount of farming that could be done.
What were the three kingdoms in the Korean Peninsula when the Chinese lived there as well? (Lesson 3) Koguryo, Paekche, and Silla.
How did Silla further develop Korea after they united the peninsula? (Lesson 3) Koreans were able to create beautiful monasteries and royal tombs, along with stone and bronze sculptures. They created a large agriculture system and had extensive trade with China, which influenced their writing system and their religion of Buddhism.
What was the cause of Silla's decline? (Lesson 3) There were major disputes in the royal family and high taxation followed. This caused many revolts against them and a rebel officer of Wang Kon eventually took over.
What were the Koryo Dynasty's inventions that were inspired by China? (Lesson 3) Korean artisans created celadon pottery based off of Song ceramics, along with large wooden blocks to print Buddhist texts, which were key parts of the religion. They also made the metal type, which was a more efficient printing form than a movable type.
What is Shintoism? (Lesson 4) Shintoism is the original religion of Japan and has the beliefs of respecting nature and your ancestors. They also believed in the Kami, or spirits of nature, and the most beautiful or unordinary aspects of nature are said to be there home.
What aspects of Chinese society did Japan borrow? (Lesson 4) After Buddhism became part of the government, Prince Shotoku sent travelers to study China and brought back their styles of writing, art, cooking, gardening, and hairdressing. They originally used their central government, but later changed to a monarchy.
What was the daily life of a person of the court during the Heian period? (Lesson 4) They would spend time doing ritual and artistic activities, including writing poetry and making paintings. Throughout this time, they had to attend to the strict rules of the court and have proper etiquette.
What was the role of Samurai warriors? (Lesson 4) Samurai were hired to protect their lords, due to the extensive conflicts over power, and they were expected to do everything they can to protect the weak through the code of Bushido.
How did Feudalism make its way into Japan? (Lesson 4) Landowners in the country created their own independent cities and armies to fight others for power. Since farmers and small landowners were scared of attacks from armies or pirates, they traded land for protection, allowing lords to gain a lot of power.
