What war was the first total war? World War I was the first total war (Not global war; whole countries dedicated to war).
What were some of the strategies used by governments to wage war? Governments used a variety of strategies, including political propaganda, art, media, and intensified forms of nationalism, to mobilize populations (both in the home countries and the colonies) for the purpose of waging war.
What helped to raise more money and power for the governments? Women, propaganda, increased government $ and power (show WWI posters, book of poems)
What were some of the greatest impacts to families because of the war? huge armies/draft, huge industry, rationing, dead (over 2x Napoleonic wars), shell shock
What did new military technology lead to? New military technology led to increased levels of wartime casualties.
What were the main military technologies that emerged during WWI? Machine guns, subs, gas, planes, tanks, communications
Where were the battlegrounds of WWI? primarily a European war: western front Germany v. UK, France; eastern front Germany v. Russia
Which side was Italy with? Who did the Ottoman join? Italy switched sides; Italy switched sides; Ottoman joined Germany, battle of Gallipoli 1915
What was the result of trench warfare in the West? trench warfare in the west (battles of Somme, Verdun 1916) meant millions died but neither side advanced
What was the result of WWI on Russia by 1917? by 1917 Russia was suffering domestic revolutions and pulled out in early 1918 (Communist party in Russia pulled out)
What did the US do in 1917? the US in 1917 decided to enter the war, German subs sinking our ships
What was Germany's stance by 1918? by 1918 Germany was exhausted and asked for peace terms
