dual court system a court system made up of both federal and state courts
presumed assumed or supposed to be true
jurisdiction a court's authority to hear and decide cases
exclusive jurisdiction authority of only federal courts to hear and decides cases
concurrent jurisdiction authority for both state and federal courts to hear and decides cases
original jurisdiction the authority to hear cases for the first time
ruling an offical decsion by a judge or a court that settles a case and may also establish the meaning of a law
opinion a view or judgement formed about something, not nessarily based on fact or knowlege.
precedent an earlier event or action that is regared as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances
litigants A person involved in a lawsuit.
consent permission for something to happen or agreement to do something
tenure the conditions under which land or buildings are held or occupied
preliminary an action or event preceding or done in preparation for something fuller or more important
subporena a writ ordering a person to attend court
challenged lacking or deficient in a specified respect.
writ of certiorari to be more fully imformed
docket a calender or list of cases for trail or people having cases pending
caseload the amount of work with which a doctor, lawyer, or social worker is concered at one time.
brief of short duration
stare decisis the legal principle of determing points in litigation according to
concurring opinion a statement written by a justice who votes with the majority, but for different reasons
dissenting opinon a statement written by a justice who disagrees with the majority opinion, presenting his or her opinion
unanimous opinion The surpreme court rules on a case in which all justices agree on the ruling
draft to write a document in its first form; to make an outline or a rough version
appellate jurisdiction the authority of a court to hear a case appealed from a lower court
