Imperialism

TermDefinition
Imperialism A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, socially, and economically.
Sphere of Influence A foreign region in which a nation has control over trade and other economic activities.
Protectorate An independent country whose government policies and land are controlled by an outside power.
Scramble for Africa Sudden wave of conquests in Africa by European powers in the 1880s and 1890s. Britain obtained most of eastern Africa, France most of northwestern Africa.
Cecil Rhodes British colonial financier and statesman in South and Central Africa made a fortune in gold and diamond mining.
King Leopold II King of Belgium He was active in encouraging the exploration of Central Africa and became the ruler of the Congo Free State.
Berlin Conference (1884-1885) a meeting at which representatives from European nations agreed upon rules for the European colonization of Africa
Boers Also known as Afrikaners, the sector of the white population of South Africa that was descended from early Dutch settlers who were primarily involved in agriculture/ranching.
Liberia A West African nation founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society. Remained independent during the Imperialism Age.
Missionaries Tended to support imperialism as an opportunity for evangelism in other countries, to spread Christianity to other countries.
Suez Canal It opened to shipping in 1869 and shortened the sea voyage between Europe and Asia. Its strategic importance led to the British conquest of Egypt in 1882.
Rudyard Kipling British writer who wrote of "the white man's burden" and justified imperialism
Opium War A conflict between Britain and China, lasting from 1839 to 1842, over Britain's opium trade in China
Causes of Imperialism Industrial Revolution led to a demand for more raw resources; Europeans wanted new markets to sell their goods in; Europeans had better weapons and technology; European desire to spread religion and culture; belief in Social Darwinism
Boer War Lasting from 1899 to 1902, Dutch colonists and the British competed for control of territory in South Africa.
Settlement Colony Type of colony created by transporting large numbers of people to live in another area.
Boxer Rebellion A 1900 revolt in China, aimed at ending foreign influence in the country.
Open Door Policy A policy proposed by the U.S. in 1899, under which all nations would have equal opportunities to trade in China.
Treaty of Paris 1898 The treaty that ended the Spanish-American War in 1898
U.S.S. Maine Ship that explodes off the coast of Havana, Cuba and helped contribute to the start of the Spanish-American War.
Spanish-American War 1898 war that began when the United States demanded Cuba's independence from Spain
