Songhai | largest of the West African empires; led by rulers Sunni Ali and Askia the Great |
Timbuktu | great trading city of West Africa |
Great Zimbabwe | powerful kingdom from 1100s to 1400s in southern Africa that was the center of a powerful gold trading network; also known for its huge stone walled fortress |
