Taxonomy the scientific classification of plants and animals according to their presumed evolutionary relationship to each other
Botanical Nomenclature orderly classification and naming of plants; ie taxonomy focused on plants
Domain highest taxonomic rank in the hierarchical biological classification system, above the kingdom level; 3 domains of life - Archaea, Bacteria, Eurakya
Kingdom the second highest taxonomic rank, just below domain; divided into smaller groups called phyla
Phylum a primary category in biological taxonomy especially of animals that ranks above the class and below the kingdom
Class a taxonomic rank, as well as a taxonomic unit, a taxon, in that rank; well-known ranks in descending order of size are domain, kingdom, phylum, order, family, genus, and species, with class fitting between phylum and order.
Order a taxonomic rank used in classifying organisms, generally below the class, and comprised of families sharing a set of similar nature or character
Family a unit of plant classification grouping related genera
Genus a group of related species; one or more genera are grouped in a family
Species a group of individuals with many anatomical characteristics in common and usually interbreeding freely
Specific Epithet the second word in a botanical name
Cultivar a combination of the words "cultivated variety", designating a human-made or human-maintained plant variety
Variety a naturally occuring subdivision of a species; usually differs from a species in on or more minor ways
Pomology the science and practice of fruit growing
Olericulture the science and practice of vegetable growing
Arboriculture the branch of horticulture that deals with the care and maintenance of trees
Urban Forestry is the care and management of single trees and tree populations in urban settings for the purpose of improving the urban environment; involves both planning and management, including the programming of care and maintenance operations of the urban forest.
Floriculture the science and practice of flower growing and arrangement
Entomology the branch of zoology concerned with the study of insects
Plant Pathology defined as the study of the organisms and environmental conditions that cause disease in plants, the mechanisms by which this occurs, the interactions between these causal agents and the plant, and the methods of managing or controlling plant disease
Landscape Design/Architecture develops plans for the planted areas around homes and small commercial buildings - includes - paved areas, fencing, walls, plants, irrigation; architecture - requires different training working on commercial design and requires a license
Plant Propagation responsible for reproducing all the plants needed for growing into salable size ones that will be made available to the public or wholesaled; greenhouse or outdoors; thorough knowledge of how each plant is propagated is necessary
