What were the main causes of WWI? The causes of World War I included imperialist expansion and competition for resources. In addition, territorial and regional conflicts combined with a flawed alliance system and intense nationalism to escalate the tensions into global conflict.
What was Militarism? Militarism: most nations were spending huge amounts on weapons; in some cases the armies were influencing political decisions
What alliances were made during this time? Alliances: original sides Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary v. Russia, France, UK; danger of being dragged into conflict
What was Imperialism? Imperialism: competition for colonial empires made them more hostile
What was Nationalism? Nationalism: hyper patriotism and belief that the other peoples were inferior; desire to have one's own nation
Who was assassinated in Serbia in June 1914? Austrian Archduke assassinated in Serbia June 1914 (act out)
What was the July Crisis? July crisis: Austria-Hungary sent ultimatum to Serbia; Serbia complied but not completely
What did Germany promise Austria-Hungary? Germany promised Austria-Hungary a “blank check”; Russia mobilized, Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia; Germany threatened France and Russia
What did the Schlieffen plan call for? German Schlieffen plan called for its mobilization against France, then Russia
Where did Germany invade? Germany invaded Belgium and France; UK entered August
