Teachings of Jesus

Topic One 8 RE

TermDefinition
Beatitude Happiness or blessedness as the enduring possession of perfect good.
Beatitudes The promises of happiness made by Christ to those who faithfully accept his teaching and follow his divine example.
Christian Love The law of selfless love, which Christ said was a new commandment, by which those who are truly Christian would be recognised.
Compassion Pity at another person's sorrow or misfortune, with the desire to alleviate or, on occasion, even to suffer in the other's stead.
Forgiveness Pardon or remission of an offense. Only God can forgive sins, since he alone can restore sanctifying grace to a person who has sinned gravely and thereby lost the state of grace.
Justice It is the constant and permanent determination to give everyone his or her rightful due and always recognise each one's rights, under all circumstances.
Kingdom of God The reign or rule of God: "the kingdom of God is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Rom 14:17).
Mercy Being kind and forgiving. Founded on compassion, mercy differs from compassion or the feeling of sympathy in putting this feeling into practice with a readiness to assist.
Ministry Authorised service of God in the service of others, according to specified norms revealed by Christ and determined by the Church.
Parable A short story based on a familiar life experience used to teach a spiritual lesson. Jesus used the parable many times in his public ministry.
Salvation As sin is the greatest evil, salvation is mainly liberation from sin and its consequences.
Service Performing one's religious duty as a creature toward God, and fulfilling one's moral responsibility of meeting the needs of others.
