Autocracy A system of government by one person with absolute power.
Chivalry A code of conduct for knights during the Middle Ages including the qualities idealized by knighthood such a bravery and gallantry towards women
Czar Russian word for Caesar, used as a title for Russian monarchs.
Excommunication Banishment from the church
Feudalism A political system in which nobles are granted the use of lands that legally belong to their King, in exchange for their loyalty, military service, and protection of the people who live on the land.
Fief land granted by a lord to a vassal in exchange for loyalty and service
Great Schism of 1054 the official split between the Western Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church of the East
Hagia Sophia the Church of Holy Wisdom in Constantinople, considered the best example of Byzantine architecture.
Icon a representation or image of a sacred person, often considered sacred itself
Justinian's Code of Laws This code was composed by the Emperor Justinian based on Roman laws, were the clearest and most comprehensive laws of the time. It spread Roman legal principle beyond the Empire
Knight A man who received an honor and land in exchange for serving a lord as a soldier.
Lord In feudal Europe, a person who controlled land and could therefore grants estates to vassals.
Manor A large estate, often including farms and a village, ruled by a lord.
Manoralism Economic system during the Middle Ages that revolved around self-sufficient farming estates where lord and peasants shared the land.
Middle Ages/Medieval the period of European history from the fall of the Roman Empire in the West (5th century) to the fall of Constantinople (1435)
Monastery A place where communities of monks live lives of devotion to God in isolation from the outside world.
Patriarch The highest church official; appointed by the Emperor to lead the Eastern Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire
Secular Non-religious; concerned with the worldly rather that spiritual matters.
Serf A person who is bound to the land and owned by a feudal lord.
Vassal a person under the protection of the feudal lord to whom he or she owes allegiance.
