What is the largest difference between the Neolithic and Paleolithic time periods? They way in which they obtained their food supply. They went from being hunters and gatherers to food producers. This was done by learning to grow crops and domesticate animals.

When did the Sumerians settle into Mesopotamia? 3500 B.C.
How did the Sumerians control their physical environment around them? By building up the levees to control the flooding of the rivers
What is a ziggurat? a temple with many levels that became the home to the city's chief god
What was at the center of every Sumerian city? a ziggurat, a temple which was the home to the city's chief god
What is a city-state? It is a Sumerian city in the center surrouned by farmlands
Who was included in the middle class? artisans, government officials, shopkeepers and skilled workers
who was included in the upper class? the priests and merchants
Who was included in the lower class? farmers, unskilled workers and fishermen

Who was Hammurabi? The King of Babylon who created a Code of Laws that were harsh and took on the belief of, "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth"
What is Sargon I known for doing? uniting conquered city-states and creating the first empire
Which culture is known for having the oldest written records? Sumer
What are some of the contributions of Mesopotamia? written language, the wheel, the plow, a sailboat, calender, and math system
Who was Gilgamesh? a legendary hero, believed to be a demi-god, of Sumerian culture
What is the largest river that flows through Africa? The Nile River
What was a pyramid? Tombs for the Egyptian pharaohs, they were made to protect them from invaders and the harsh elements of the weather
What was a pharaoh? an Egyptian ruler
Where did most Egyptians live? along the banks of the Nile River
At first, what two kingdoms made up Egypt? Upper and Lower Egypt
what is the written language of the Egyptians made up of pictures? hieroglyphics
what was papyrus used for? rafts, boats, baskets, sandals, and columns for houses, but the main reason was it was used as paper
