The Middle East

TermDefinition
civil law A nonreligious set of laws established by a nation to provide order.
emir A Muslim leader in the Middle East; often princes or tribal chiefs.
Sharia law A system of religious law based on the teachings of Islam.
sultan A title of honor for Muslim rulers; originally described rulers with absolute power.
tribal law Rules based on the Middle Eastern tribal values of family loyalty, honor, and respect.
