| corruption | dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power |
| fundamentalism | strict adherence to the basic principles of any subject |
| extremism | the distortion of beliefs in order to promote violence |
| radicalization | the process by which an individual or group comes to adopt extremist views |
| feminism | a philosophy advocating equality between the sexes |
| proxy war | a war instigated or encouraged by a major power which does not itself become involved in the fighting |
| insurgency | a rebellion of multiple groups against a common enemy |
| genocide | the mass destruction of a particular cultural group |
| UN Security Council | fifteen countries in charge of overseeing UN peacekeeping operations; five are permanent (China, France, England, Russia, US), ten rotate every two years |
| NATO | North Atlantic Treaty Organization; an alliance of 28 countries that have agreed to come to one another's aid in times of conflict |
| OPEC | Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries; an organization of major oil exporters who coordinate export policies and set prices |
| ASEAN | Association of Southeast Asian Nations; ten countries in Southeast Asia who cooperate on economic, political, and security matters |
| AU | African Union; an organization of African countries who cooperate on economic, political, and security matters |
| EU | European Union; an organization of European countries with common currency and common economic, social, and security policies |
| cultural fusion | the blending of aspects from different cultures to create something new |
| cultural diffusion | the exchange of goods and ideas between cultures |
| nationalism | pride in one's country |
| ethnocentrism | judging other cultures according to the standards and customs of one's own culture |
| xenophobia | prejudice against people from other countries |
| isolationism | the policy of isolating one's country from the affairs of other nations by declining to enter into alliances, foreign economic commitments, or international agreements |
