What started the Iran-Iraq War? 1980: Iraqi land & air invasion of West Iran. Iraqi's claim-Iran had been attacking them with artillery. Iran & Iraq fought over Shattab Arab waterway
Why were chemical weapons used? Iran used offensive methods toward Iraq causing them to use chemical weapons
How did the US and other western nations get involved? They got involved in 1987 after Iran attacked tankers in Persian Gulf
Who supplied weapons to Iran & Iraq? Iran got weapons frm N. Korea, China, & US (supported by Syria & Libya). Iraq got weapons from Soviet Union (supported by Western nations and Arab nations)
Why do you think Iraq might have been afraid of Iran's new Islamic Fundamentalist government? They might support the Shiite Muslims to rise up against the Sunni Muslims & take more territory
What started the second Persian Gulf War(Desert Storm)? 1990: Iraq considered Kuwait part of Iraq; Iraq said Kuwait was illegally tapping Iraq Oil; Strained relations between Baghdad & Kuwait
What was outcome of Desert Storm war? Kuwait's government restored; Iraq defeated;
How was the Ayatollah Khomeini able to gain support in Iran? his protest writings circulated that opposed dictatorship of Shah of Iran
How was the Shah's government weakened and why was he losing control in Iran? citizens staged demonstrations and Shah ordered police and military to stop them by shooting them.
Why kinds of strikes & unrest were taking place? students protested President Carter's visit to Iran 40 days after massacre of students
What did Khomeini do when he returned to Iran? refused to return to Iran until Shah was gone; declared new Islamic Republic when he came to power
What is a theocracy? government controlled by religious leaders
What is Islamic concept of "jihad"? striving or struggling in the way of Allah (God)
What is a common interpretation of "jihad"? Holy War
