endocrine system

TermDefinition
endocrine system made up of organs and glands that produce, store, and release hormones.
hormones are chemicals used by the body to increase or decrease activity of the hormone's specific target cells. this aids the body in homeostasis.
exocrine glands release hormones into a duct for delivery to the target cells.
endocrine glands release hormones directly into the blood stream
Adrenal glands/ Cortex: aldosterone hormone that regulates electrolytes and fluid volume
Adrenal glands/ Cortex: cortisol hormone that regulates carbohydrates
Adrenal Glands/ Medulla: epinephrine hormone that is the fight-or-flight response.
Adrenal glands/ Medulla: norepinephrine vasoconstrictor (narrowing of blood vessels)
hypothalamus/ Produces: antidiuretic hormone stimulates reabsorption of water in the kidneys
Hypothalamus/ Produces: oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions during labor and release of breast milk
Ovaries/ Estrogen development of secondary sex characteristics in females, regulates menses
Ovaries/ Progesterone Prepares the body for pregnancy
Pancreas/ Alpha cells: glucagon increases blood sugar
Pancreas/ Beta cells: insulin deceases blood sugar
Parathyroid gland/ Parathyroid hormone regulates calcium
Pineal gland/ melatonin regulates onset of puberty, biological clock
Pituitary gland anterior/ Growth hormone stimulates body growth
Pituitary gland anterior/ melanocyte-stimulating hormone stimulates skin pigment
Pituitary gland anterior/Adrenocorticotropic hormone regulates adrenal cortex
Pituitary gland anterior/ Thyroid-stimulating hormone regulates thyroid gland
Pituitary gland anterior/ Follicle-stimulating hormone stimulates growth of ova and sperm
Pituitary gland anterior/ luteinizing hormone and prolactin stimulates ovulation (females) and testosterone production (males)
Pituitary gland, posterior/ Releases: Antidiuretic hormone stimulates reabsorption of water by the kidneys
