| acid rain | Precipitation created when pollution and water vapor mix. |
| emissions | Gases released by vehicles when their engines are running. |
| eutrophication | A process that occurs when algae feed off fertilizers and quickly multiply in a body of water, cutting off oxygen and killing marine life. |
| ozone | A type of pollution that is created when smog reacts with sunlight and that may cause severe health problems for some people. |
| terraces | Flat areas that are cut into the side of hills and are used for growing crops. |
| conservation | The protection of resources, such as water, energy, or soil. |
| legislation | A law passed by a government. |
| rationing | Limiting the use of a resource, especially when there is not enough of it to meet everyone's needs. |
| sustainability | Meeting present needs while also maintaining resources for future needs. |
