Cultures vocab

TermDefinition
cultural region A specific area where the people share one or more unifying cultural elements.
culture The shared values, practices, and beliefs of a group.
dominant culture The prevailing or most accepted cultural group.
norm The behavior that is expected and accepted within a social group.
popular culture The accepted cultural patterns practiced by the majority of people in a particular group.
subculture A cultural group that exists within the dominant culture.
deities Supernatural beings that are worshipped, such as gods or goddesses.
dialects Variations within languages.
ethnicity A group of people linked together based on common characteristics such as culture, beliefs, or common history.
race The classification of humans based on physical or biological traits that are inherited.
religion A set of organized beliefs and practices that are often centered around one or more deities.
tolerance A fair, objective, and understanding view of those whose culture, race, and nationality differ from one’s own.
adapt To change habits or behaviors in order to survive in a particular climate or location.
diversified Have made something more varied.
modernized When something has been updated in order to take advantage of new technologies, new information, or new beliefs.
modify To change a part of something.
