| aquifer | An underground layer of rock or sand that holds water. |
| condensation | The process by which water vapor cools and becomes a liquid. |
| evaporation | The process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas. |

| glacier | A giant, frozen sheet of ice that moves slowly over the ground. |
| irrigation | The artificial transportation of water to plants, trees, or crops. |
| nonrenewable resource | A resource that can’t be replaced quickly by Earth’s natural processes. |
| precipitation | Water that falls to the Earth, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail. |
| renewable resource | A resource that is replaced relatively quickly by Earth’s natural processes. |
| reservoir | A man-made lake used to store water. |
| arable | Good for farming. |
| clearcutting | Cutting down all of the trees and plant life in an area, with no care given to the sustainability of the forest. |
| deforestation | Cutting down or burning all of the trees in an area of forested land. |
| fertilizer | A substance that is added to soil in order to promote the growth of plants and crops. |
| forestry | The science of managing forests for the benefit of people. |
| nutrients | Substances needed by plants and animals to survive and grow. |
| topsoil | The layer of soil closest to the surface, which contains organic material that helps plants grow. |
| decomposition | The natural process by which plants and the bodies of animals break down after death. |
| fossil fuel | A naturally occurring organic fuel produced by the decomposition of ancient plants and animals. |
| mineral | A naturally occurring solid substance found beneath the Earth’s surface. |
| refined | Improved by removing unwanted elements or substances. |
