European Medieval Society
Term | Definition |

Medieval | from the 6th to the 16th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance & the Age of Discovery |
Dark Ages | from 5th to 8th century a cultural and economic deterioration occurred in Western Europe following the decline of the Roman Empire with relatively no documentation of what happened |
Charlemagne | was the King of the Franks, during the Early Middle Ages, he united the majority of western and central Europe, he was first to rule from western Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire |
Bubonic Plague | a deadly disease that spread through Europe and killed one out of every three people |
Crusades | A series of military expeditions launched by Christian Europeans to win the Holy land back from Muslims. Means Holy war |
Feudalism | A system of promises & obligations that governed the relationship between lords & vassals. |
Manorialism | system of economic, social, and political organization in which a lord enjoyed a variety of rights over land and tenants |
Canon Law | the Church's own body of laws; this law applied to religious teachings, the behavior of the clergy, & even marriages & morals |
Heretics | those who hold to a belief opposed to the established teachings of a church |
Excommunication | the action of officially excluding someone from participation in the sacraments and services of the Christian Church |
Fief | The property or fee granted to a vassal for his maintenance by his lord in return for service. |
Vassal | A knight who promised to support & to be loyal to a lord in exchange for land. |
Norsemen | a North Germanic ethnolinguistic group of the Early Middle Ages, during which they spoke the Old Norse language |
Serf | Workers who were tied to the land on which they lived much like indentured servants |
Chivalry | The code of honorable behavior for medieval knights. High standards of conduct and loyalty; must be kind to poor |
Cardinals | were the deacons of the seven regions of the city at the beginning of the 6th century |
