List 2 - Vocabulary for Mesopotamia Unit

Sumer First civilization of Mesopotamia; developed the earliest system of writing
Babylon Civilization of Mesopotamia known for their architecture and astronomy.
Assyria Civilization in Mesopotamia with a fierce army and known for making iron tools/weapons
Hammurabi King of Babylon known for his code of laws. (“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”.)
Monarchy A government with a queen or king
Empire Land with many different territories governed by one ruler
Irrigation A way of supplying water for farming
Flourish To grow and do well (thrive)
ziggurat A temple built in ancient Mesopotamia (for worship).
scribe Person who writes information/records
