Blood Type | Determined by presence and type of Antigens on surface of RBCs |
Centrifuge | Lab device used to separate fluids, gas or liquid, based on density |

Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) | Where standards and guideline are set |
Clinical Lab Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA '88) | Mandated regulation of all facilities that perform patient testing |
Clinical Laboratory | Analyzes samples at request of physician or licensed healthcare professional. Results for diagnosis, monitoring, or prognosis |

Coagulation | Process of making a Blood Clot |
College of American Pathologists (CAP) | Inspection and Accreditation occur every 2 years. Unannounced inspection every 6 months for Accredit renewal |
Complete Blood Count (CBC) | Test used to evaluate overall health and detect disorders |
Culture and Sensitivity (C&S) Test | Test that Detects and Identifies Microorganisms and determine most effective Antibiotic Therapy |
Flow Cytometry | Identifies cellular markers on the surface of WBCs |
Forensic | Application of scientific principles and techniques to matters of criminal justice, include collection, examination, and analyses |
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) | Health insurance plan that limits coverage to care from doctors who work for/contract with HMO, full service outpatient clinics |
Hemolyzed | Hemolysis, or breakage of RBCs, Can give Serum a pink tinge (Hemolyzed Serum) |
Hemostasis | Arrest of bleeding, whether by normal or coagulation means |
Icteric | The presence of high level of Bilirubin, ranges of dark/light yellow |
Immunochemistry | Tests use antibiotics to detect a range of substances in blood |
Immunohematology | Branch of hematology and transfusion medicine which studies antigen-antibody reactions and analogous phenomena |
The Joint Commission | Labs must be inspected and Accredited every 2 years |
Lipemic | The presence of excess fat or lipids in the blood |
Molecular Diagnosis | Test used to diagnose genetic disorders, analyze forensic evidence, track disease, and identify micro-biologic pathogens |
Nursing Home | Phlebotomist may be employed by a nursing home to obtain samples from clients for analysis by a reference lab |
Physician Office Laboratory (POL) | Small medical lab located within a physician office, group practice, or clinic |
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) | Group of healthcare providers that provide healthcare to a specific group, often at a reduced rate |
Professional Services | Provide service at request of licensed practitioner who aid in the diagnosis and treatment of a patient |
Reagent | Test chemicals embedded in pads indicate results of test |
Reference Laboratory | Independent lab that analyzes samples from other healthcare facilities or from outpatient sent from a healthcare provider |
