What do Christians believe in? the Bible Old and New Testaments; the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) but monotheism, Jesus' death on the cross, salvation by faith/repentance; love is the greatest commandment
What is Monotheism? the doctrine or belief that there is only one God
What is the greatest commandment of Christians? LOVE is the greatest commandment, as stated by Jesus.
How many branches of Christian Churches are there? three branches: Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant;
What is the CHURCH? the church is people not a building; The church is actually the BODY OF CHRIST, the people of Christ.
What practices are different in the Christian church than others? practices like baptism, communion, others (e.g., prayer)
What are the TERMS for HUMANITY? in terms of humanity: made in the image of God; fallen (separated from God); body/soul; angels, demons, Satan
Whose image was MAN made in Christianity? Man was made in God's image?
What does being FALLEN mean? It means that you are separated from God in Christianity.
What is more important in Christianity? The body or the soul? The eternal soul.
Who is Satan? Satan was one of God's angels that fell to earth and was separated from God.
What is the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ? It is the belief of Christians that Jesus will return to earth again to take all of the believers home to heaven.
What is the difference between heaven and hell in Christian beliefs? Christians believe that heaven is where the soul goes when they die if they are believers and have accepted Christ into their lives. Hell is where a soul goes if they have lived a sinful life and have not asked God for forgiveness.
When was Europe predominately "Christian"? History: By 1200 Europe was predominantly “Christian” but not entirely.
Did Jews live in Europe? In what roles? Yes. Some Jews lived there as scholars and engaged in prosperous business.
What part of Europe did Jews migrate to and why? Many Jews migrated to eastern Europe due to persecution.
Where did the Muslims live? What did they dominate? Muslims lived in Spain and dominated SE Europe; a state of war existed between the two sides in both places.
What was the relationship between the Muslim world and the Jewish world? a state of war existed between the two sides in both places of Spain and SE Europe.
What function did the church serve when political structures were weak? The church held society together when political structures were weak.
What empire was what remained of the Roman Empire? The Byzantine Empire
What did the Pope argue with the Political leaders over? Political leaders argued with the Pope over the extent of church power in everyday life.
What happened to the church when they became more affluent? Increasing affluence brought more corruption into the church.
What happened in the 1400's in Catholicism? In fact there was a major conflict in the 1400s over who would be Pope.
What happened to those who opposed the Catholic church? Those who opposed the church could face severe punishment.
What were the Crusades? The Crusades were an attempt to restore Christian rule to the “holy” lands. They were largely unsuccessful.
What was the Byzantine Empire? The Byzantine Empire (the eastern remnants of the Roman Empire) with its Orthodox Christianity had dwindled to a small kingdom near Constantinople.

Who is the leader of the Catholic church? The Pope
How would you describe Europe in the Post-Classical period in history? Europe was generally isolated. It survived the Mongol threat and overcame Islamic intrusion.
What made European politics weak? Europe was rarely united politically due to distances, economic weaknesses, and language differences (and prior fall of Rome, Muslim, Vikings). Often there were weak kings and strong nobles vying for power.

When was the Magna Carta signed and why? The Magna Carta 1215 resulted from nobles resisting the English king’s authority. At times there could be significant clashes such as the hundred years’ war despite holding religion in common.

What was feudalism? In each locale, a king was at the top with nobles underneath him. Lesser vassals served the nobles, and knights fought for them. Finally there were serfs at the bottom who provided labor and received protection.
What caused the rise of feudalism? The social order (feudalism) resulted from the fragmented and economic weakness in Europe.
Did the middle class include merchants or artisans in feudalism? Very few artisans and merchants made up the middle class.
What type of system organized the classes into self-sufficient villages? The manorial system organized these classes into self-sufficient villages.
How did the second half of the post-classical era impact the economy? In the second half of the post-classical era the economy revived. Cities grew.
What broke up the feudal system? The plague (and little ice age) began to break up the feudal system as peasant labor was more in demand.
How were women impacted during the Post-Classical period? There were some women’s opportunities in the church. Chivalry could include protection of women.
