When did the passage along the Silk Road FIRST decline and why? Passage along the silk road declined somewhat after Islam declined (1000s-1100s),
When did the passage along the Silk Road pick up again and why? rose with Mongols (Pax Mongolica 1200s-1300s), and
When did the passage along the Silk Road decline AGAIN and why? declined again with the fall of the Mongols and European maritime takeover (1500s).
What was the Silk Road? The Silk Road was not an actual road, consisted of several routes (including seaways?), was not made of silk (duh!), and more than silk was traded.
Would a single merchant travel all of the Silk Road? Why? Rarely did a single merchant travel the entire distance. Nomads were important either in facilitating or benefiting from or hindering trade.
What was the function of nomads on the Silk Road? Nomads were important either in facilitating or benefiting from or hindering trade.
What was moved/traded on the Silk Road? Mostly luxury goods were traded, however there was a move from surplus to commodities. Items traded included textiles, porcelains, iron and steel.
What enhanced trade on the Silk Road? Trade was enhanced with items such as bills of exchange (modern equivalent is check). Paper money sometimes substituted for gold/silver/copper.
What improved trade? What was created to help run credit? As trade improved with more money economies, credit increased. Banking houses: lent money, charged interest, and guarded deposits.
What did merchants need to survive the wilderness? Merchants needed places to stay in the vast wilderness so caravanserai were built. Like the pony express, at minimum there were wells, a roof, and walls for protection.
What cities grew because of the trade in western China? Cities grew with trade such as Kashgar (in western China) and Samarkand (in modern Uzbekistan). These two were about 500 miles apart.
What countries did the Silk Road connect? The silk road connected China, India, Persia/Europe.
How long was the Silk Road? It was about 7000 miles from east to west, or 4000 miles from Nanjing to Baghdad and another 3000 miles from Venice to Baghdad.
How long did it take Marco Polo to travel from Europe to China? It took Marco Polo 3 years to get from Europe to China (flying time today is 10 hours).
What religions spread on the Silk Road? Religions spread particularly Islam and Buddhism.
