Classical Civilizations and the Byzantine Empire

TermDefinition
Democracy A government controlled by its citizens, either directly or through representatives.
Polis A Greek term for city-state
Republic a form of government in which power is in the hands of representatives and leaders are elected by the citizens
Empire extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority
Hellenistic the idea of being like Greek people and culture
Christianity religion based on the person and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, or its beliefs and practices
Acropolis A fortified hilltop in an ancient Greek city. The most famous example is in Athens
Great Schism breach between the Eastern & Western churches, the division within the Roman Catholic Church from 1378 to 1429, during which rival popes reigned at Rome and Avignon
Socrates Philosopher that believed to know thy self and question everything and only pursuit of goodness brings happiness
Plato Philosopher who was Socrates student, who believed that the world is full of forms and that the perfect government would be a philosopher king
Aristotle Philosopher that believed in golden mean and came up with logic and scientific method
Justinian Byzantine emperor who reconquered much of the territory previously ruler by Rome, made a new legal code
Alexander the Great son of King Phillip II, one of the greatest empire of his time. helped blend cultures.
Julius Caesar a successful Roman general & famous speaker. He conquered many territories for Rome. He later became the dictator of the Roman world
Augustus Caesar The first emperor of Rome; the adopted son of Julius Caesar. During reign Rome enjoyed peace and the arts flourished
Empress Theodora remembered for being one of the most powerful women in Byzantine history, used her power to promote religious & social policies that she deemed important
