Renaissance | French for “rebirth” (c1350-1600) revival of the arts and learning that began in Italy and spread throughout Europe (most often associated with the works of Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Dante, and Da Vinci) |
Humanism | an approach in study, philosophy, world view, or practice that focuses on human values and concerns, attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters |
Secular | worldly, pertaining to the material (as opposed to the spiritual or religious); nonreligious in nature; not belonging to a religious order |
Niccolò Machiavelli | an Italian historian, diplomat, philosopher, humanist and writer based in Florence during the Renaissance; He was a founder of modern political science Author of The Prince |
Leonardo da Vinci | an Italian Renaissance polymath; painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer who epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal |
Michelangelo Buonarroti | an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art |
Raphael | Italian Renaissance painter and architect; one of the archangels of medieval Christianity; male first name; family name; archangel in Judaism |
Johannes Gutenberg | German printer, he developed a printing press that used movable type; Gutenberg’s first publication was a 1,282-page Bible |
Desiderius Erasmus | Dutch priest, he published In Praise of Folly in which he criticized corrupt clergy; His criticisms helped inspire the Protestant Reformation |
