Mecca | A City in Saudi Arabia; where Muhammad grew up and lived for some of his life |
Ka'bah | Big black structure in Mecca. Originally used for pagan worship but now used by Muslims. Muslims must face the Ka'bah when they pray |
Ramadan | Holy month Islamic festival when Muslims must fast during daylight hours. |
Qur'an | Sacred Islamic Book. Contains the teachings and visions of Muhammad |
Allah | Muslim God Means "the god" |
Medina | Where Muhammad went when he had to leave Mecca (or he would have been killed) |
Hegira | When Muhammad fled from Mecca to Medina |
Islam | The religion started by Muhammad Literally means "submission" |
Battle of Badr | When the people of Mecca went to fight Muhammad (because he kept stealing from their trade caravans). Muhammad was outnumbered, but won. Muhammad used this victory to tell people that his teachings were correct |
Muslim | Someone who follows the religion Islam |
Caliph | Islamic leader |
Wars of Apostasy | The fighting that happened after Muhammad died. Abu Bak'r fought with anyone who wanted freedom from Islam |
Hadith | A collection (group) of writings about Muhammads life. Includes what he said, did and approved |
Shahadah | First Pillar of Islam - to say the creed, "there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the prophet of Allah." |
Salat | Second Pillar of Islam - to pray five times a day, facing the Ka'bah |
Zakat | Third Pillar of Islam - to give money to the community / poor |
Sawm | Fourth Pillar of Islam - to fast (not eat or drink) during Ramadan. At night they are allowed to eat. |
Hajj | To take a pilgrimage (religious trip) to Mecca to worship Allah |
Sharia | Islamic Law |
Jihad | Islamic holy war |
Infidel | Someone who does not believe in Islam |
Umayyad | Muslim dynasty that moved the capital of the empire to Damascus (from Mecca) |
Damascus | a city in Syria |
Caravan | a group of traders, travelling by camels |
Dynasty | when the authority / power of an area is kept within the family |
