(Carr) French Revolution, Reign of Terror & Napoleon - Exam Review

Bourgeoisie The middle class; neither nobles or peasants.
Conservative One who opposes rapid changes and holds traditional values.
Estates-General Assembly of the three estates of France; last meeting in 1789.
Exile Forced removal from one's native country.
Guillotine A device designed to decapitate people.
Radical Someone who favors extreme change.
Republic A government run by representatives elected by the people.
Royalist A supporter of the king or queen.
Tithe One-tenth of a person's income, paid to support a church.
First Estate This estate encompassed the clergy and made up 1% of the population.
Second Estate This estate included the nobility or aristocracy, made up approximately 1% of the population, and were only sometimes asked to pay taxes during wartime. The richest of this group could hold high ranks of office.
Third Estate This estate included 98% of the population and many different groups of people, including the bourgeoisie, peasants, and the working class.

National Assembly New name for the Estates-General and accomplished more say so in government for the lower classes.
Tennis Court Oath Created by the Third Estate when they were forced out of the Estates-General meeting.

Fundamental cause of the French Revolution Abuses of those who were in power.
Reign of Terror The time after the execution of the king and queen of France when "traitors" of the French Revolution were taken to the guillotine for execution.
Maximilien Robespierre He began his career as an attorney working for the poor and underrepresented; then became a strong supporter of the French Revolution; and known for the phrase, "Let terror be the order of the day!"
