Aromatherapy Terminology for Bodyworkers

Aroma an odor arising from spices
aromatherapy is used of plant-derived essential oils for therapeutic purposes
Aromatic having an aroma; fragrant or sweet-smelling
Aromaticity the quality or state of being aromatic
Baths For an immersion bath
Blend a combination of essential oils in a base or carrier oil
Carrier oil A neutral oil used to dilute an essential oil.
CO2 Extraction produces CO2 extracts
Compress Add 2 to 5 drops of essential oil to a small dish of water. Drench a washcloth in scented water. Wring out excess water and apply to the client's skin
Core Oil oil that addresses the primary purpose or goal of the treatment
Diffusion A diffuser is used to disperse essential oils into the air. Add 10 to 15 drops of essential oils to a diffuser. Add more drops as needed
Distillation produces essential oils and hydrosols
Enhancer strengthens the core oil in its purpose and therapeutic action

Massage Lubricant Add 15 to 20 drops of essential oil to 1 oz of a oil-based lubricant for a full-body massage or locally add 12-15 drops to 1/2oz
Olfaction sense of smell
Olfactory Bulb the first brain structure to pick up smell information from the nose
peppermint adds a sense of excitement and enthusiasm as well as raising attention level
Room mister Add 2 to 10 drops per 1 oz of water in a spray bottle. Shake before use
Rose geranium This essential oil used for Relaxing & soothing this enhance sensuality and assist in confidence building
Rosemary This essential oil aids in stimulating mental clarity
sandalwood This essential oil promotes deep relaxation & calms the mind & emotions
Scent derived from French to feel
Solvent extraction the use of solvents and produces absolutes
Synergies a combination of essential oils without a base carrier
Tangerine This essential oil is said to clear away negativity
tea tree This essential oil acts as an antispetic used to disinfect contaminated items
Volatility the tendency of a substance to vaporize
Ylang-Ylang This essential oil can irritate skin but used to calm the nervous system ease depression & reduce frustration.
