Byzantine Empire

| Justinian | Byzantine emperor who ruled from 527-565. Known for reorganizing Roman laws and rebuilding the Hagia Sophia. |
| Theodora | Justinian's wife and co-emperor. |
| Constantinople | Capital city of the eastern Roman Empire. It's now known as Istanbul and is located on the Bosporus Strait in Turkey. |
| Hagia Sophia | The name means "Holy Wisdom" and was originally built as a church, then became a mosque, and is now a museum. |
| Nika Riots | Deadly riots in 532 CE that threatened to end Justinian's Rule. The rioters burned much of the city and destroyed the original Hagia Sophia. |
| Cyril & Methodius | Eastern Orthodox missionaries who created the Cyrillic alphabet which allowed Slavic people (eastern Europeans) to write down their language. |
| Missionary | Someone who tries to convert others to a particular religion. |
| Constantine | Eastern Roman emperor who ruled from 272-337 CE. He built up the capital city of Byzantium, which was later renamed Constantinople after him. |
| Moat | A protective trench filled with water. |
| icon | A holy image, usually a portrait of Jesus or a saint. |
| The Great Schism | The event in 1054 CE that split Christianity into 2 sects. The east became Eastern Orthodox and the west became Roman Catholic. |
| Ottoman Empire | Turkish muslims who brought an end to the Byzantine Empire in 1453 CE. |
| Illuminated Manuscript | Illustrated texts created by monks, usually religious work of biblical scene or Christian ideas. |
| Greek Fire | A chemical mixture that burned even in water. Clay grenades were filled with Greek fire and thrown at the enemy. |
| Mosaic | Pieces of art formed with small tiles of glass, stone, or pottery. |
| Strait | A narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies of water. |
