JUDAISM Synagogues

Parts of a Typical Synagogue

TermDefinition
Torah The Torah is the first five books of laws and stories in the Hebrew Bible. They provide the teachings and guidance to Jewish followers.
Menorah The oldest symbol of the Jewish faith. It represents the light of God and the mission of the Jewish people to live a holy life and inspire others to do the same.
Ark A special cupboard that holds the Torah scrolls. The Ark always faces toward Jerusalem.
Bimah The reading desk where prayers are said and Jewish law is read.
Pews The bench seats where worshippers sit. They are arranged so that all worshippers face the Ark.
Ner Tamid The Eternal Light that hangs above the Ark. It is always lit and represents God's eternal presence.
10 Commandments A list of religious precepts (rules) that were said to be revealed by God to Moses on Mt. Sinai. They are central to both Judaism and Christianity.
Star of David This symbol represents King David, the first king of Jerusalem.
