Ancient Rome vocabulary

TermDefinition
Republic a type of government in which the citizens have a right to vote to select a leader. Leaders rule in the name of the people.
Patrician Members of the wealthy or upper class.
Plebian an ordinary citizen
veto to forbid: Rejection of a bill by the President or rejection of any rule by someone in power
Dictator A person int he Ancient Roman republic appointed to rule for 6 months in time of an emergency, with all powers of a King
Province unit of an empire: each province of the Roman Empire ruled by a governor AND supported by an army
Aqueduct A structure that carries water over long distance *hint: Water= aqua
Inflation an economic situation in which there is more money of LESS VALUE
Romulus and Remus twins. According to legend, they founded Rome in 753 BC
Julius Caesar Roman political and military leader. Became dictator for life, improved the government and was murdered by Roman senators because of his power.
Augustus 1st Roman emperor. Ruled after Julius Caesar. (63 BC-AD 14)
Nero Roman Emperor known for his mistreatment of Christians (AD 37-68) *Hint Nero-No Christianity
Constantine Roman Emperor- encouraged the spread of Christianity. (AD 278-337) *hint C beginning letters are the same
Caligula Roman Emperor- believed to be insane. Poor Ruler. (AD 12-41)
Marcus Aurelius Roman Emperor- Good natured, tolerant
Commodus Son of Marcus Aurelius- Poor Ruler. He was assassinated and her marked the beginning of the decline of Rome
Assassinate Murder for political reasons
Peninsula Land form surrounded by water on 3 sides
Italy Boot shaped peninsula in southern Europe
Rome Capital of Italy and the Ancient Roman Empire
Tiber River River in Italy. Rome was built on the banks.
Gaul Present day France- They fought with Romans
Carthage Ancient city on northern coast of Africa- They fought with Romans
Colosseum a large Amphitheater in Ancient Rome -site of contests and combats between people and animals
Circus Maximus huge oval arena (Chariot Races)
Constantinople Ancient city of Byzantium. Now Istanbul, Turkey
