Why was it called the "cold war"? For the most part it was words and tensions and not actual fighting.

Why was the Berlin Airlift needed? The Soviet Union tried to control all of Berlin, Germany after WWII by blocking access to the city from land. People in the free parts of Berlin were running out of food and other supplies.
How long did the Berlin Airlift last? Almost a year. (321 days)
What was the eventual result of the Berlin Airlift? Germany was divided into two countries. West Germany was a free democratic society and East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union.
Was the Berlin Wall part of the Berlin Airlift? No. It wasn't built until the 1960s.
Who helped set up the North Korean government? The Soviet Union, though your teacher might think it is China. This is wrong.
How did the Korean War start? Communist forces from North Korea invaded South Korea.
Who fought for the South Koreans in the Korean War? The US and the United Nations
How did the Korean War end? The war ended in a stalemate and the Peninsula is still divided.

What was the even where the Soviet Union tried to place nuclear missiles 90 miles off the coast of Florida? The Cuban Missile Crisis
Who was the US president during the Cuban Missile Crisis? John F. Kennedy
Who was the Soviet leader during the Cuban Missile Crisis? Nikita Khrushchev
How did the Cuban Missile Crisis end? The US blockaded and the countries were at the brink of war. It was a VERY tense time. The countries eventually negotiated and the missiles were removed.
Why did the US get involved in Vietnam? They were trying to stop communist Vietnamese rebels from taking over South Vietnam and uniting with the communist North Vietnam. It was part of containment policy.
How did people in the US feel about the Vietnam War? The country was divided. Some people supported the war and some were against it. As more US troops died, fewer people supported the war.
How did the Vietnam War end? The US made a truce and left, then North Vietnam invaded the south and united the countries as one communist country.
Who was the US Senator during the cold war who accused people of being communists (most of the charges were false but they ruined people's lives)? Joseph McCarthy
What was the name for the time period where McCarthy was accusing people of being communists? Red Scare
Who was the leader of the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s who often threatened the USA? Nikita Khrushchev
What was the term for when the Soviet Union and the US built lots of weapons in case of an attack? Arms Race
How did TV impact the opinions of US citizens during the Cold War? Americans could SEE events instead of just reading about them. This gave them different ideas about events.
Competition between the US and Soviets to be the first in space and the first to put a man on the moon? The Space Race
What country was the first to put a man in space? The Soviet Union
What country was the first to put a man on the moon? The USA
Why did the Space Race stop? The Soviet Union's poor economy did allow them to pay for it.
