Helots | Conquered group of people known as the Messenians who were forced to farm for Spartans |
Olympics | Athletic Competition held every four years in ancient Greece in honor of Zeus |
Battle of Marathon | Greek victory over the Persian army that ended the first Persian War, victory on land |
Representative Democracy | Citizens elect others to represent them in government, making decisions and passing laws on behalf of all the people |
Direct Democracy | Political system in which citizens participate directly in making decisions, make and pass laws |
Democracy | Type of government that means rule by the many or rule by the people-began in ancient Greece |
Aristocracy | Hereditary class or rulers, rule by the best people |
Delian League | A military alliance, led by Athens, to protect themselves after the Persian War. |
Peloponnesian League | A military alliance led by Sparta because they feared Athens |
Athens | Focus on democracy and a well rounded education, learning |
Sparta | Focus on war and fighting, military state |
