| Tainos | The native people that lived in the Caribean islands. |
| Conquistadors | a Spanish adventurer who explored and conquered the Americas during the 1500s. |
| Champlain | A French explorer who established the colony of Quebec. |
| Propietor | a noble granted a charter to use personal money to start a colony. |
| Virginia | The first English colony in the New World |
| Puritans | the group that tried to simplify the worship services of the Church of England in the 1600s. |
| John Smith | The leader of Jamestown |
| Jerusalem | The Holy City in which the Crusades were fought over. |
| Vikings | A group of seafaring adventures from Northern Europe who were the first Europeans to visit North America |
| Renaissance | The period from 1400 to 1600 CE when Europeans' interest in art, literature, and science was revived. |
| Cortes | The conquistador that conquered the Aztecs |
| Spanish Inquisition | A Spanish policy that forced protestants, jews, and muslims to convert to Catholicism. |
| Join Stock Company | a company owned by several investors through shares of stock. |
| Indentured Servant | an English man or woman who exchanged usually four to seven years of labor for passage to American colonies. |
| Divine Right | The belief that God appoints kings and queens. |
| Separatists | the group that broke away from the Church of England during the 1600s. |
| Pocahantus | A Powahatan woman that helped the settlers of Jamestown |
| Manors | large estates inthe Middle Ages, often including a castle, church, village and farmland. Owned by a noble. |
| Reformation | a time in history where the Christian church divided into Catholic and Protestant religions |
| Columbus | An Itailian explorere that established a trade route to the New World. |
| Pizarro | A conquistador that conquered the Incas |
| Cartier | A French explorer that attempted to find the Northwest Passage, an all water route to India. |
| Charter | a legal paper granted by a king or queen giving certain rights to a person or a group. |
| Roanoke Island | The first attempt at an English colony in the new world. It failed due to lack of planning and funds. |
| Jamestown | The first English settlement in the New World. |
| John Rolfe | A settler of Jamestown that figured out that the colony could make money by growing tobacco. |
