| Colonization | The establishing of a new settlement by a group of people who maintain ties to their home government |
| Dictatorial | Political leadership with absolute power to make laws & command the military |
| Cash Crop | A crop that is raised for profit rather than use by the producer |
| Columbian Exchange | Exchange of goods & services between the Old & New World during the Age of Discovery |
| First Americans | The indigenous people of the New World, Native Americans |
| Plantation System | The granting of lands in the New World to settlers who produced cash crops using slave labor |
| Slavery | System in which people are held in servitude or as property |
| Smallpox | Contagious, viral disease brought to the New World by Europeans & resulting in the death of a large number of Native Americans |
