World War II Vocabulary

When did Hitler come to power? 1932
Leaders of the winning countries of WWI failed to force Hitler to follow the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Appeasement
What did Hitler do? He rebuilt Germany's military, promised the Germans their lost territories, and completely ignored the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
What treaty did Hitler ignore? The Treaty of Versailles.
How did Hitler start? He took back some German territory.
Who was the ruler of Japan? Emperor Hirohito.
Who did Japan invade in 1931? China
What did Japan eventually conquer? the East indies, the Philippines, and many other pusific islands
Who became dictator of Italy? Benito Mussolini
What territories did Italy conquer? Albania and Ethiopia
Pride in your people or culture. It was used by the Nazi's in Germany and the Fascists in Italy to gain the people's support. Nationalism
Taking over other countries and ruling them. Imperialism
A group of countries working together toward a common goal. Alliances
Increasing the size of the armed forces significantly. Militarism
Who were the Axis powers? Germany, Italy, and Japan
Who were the Allied powers? Britain, USSR, USA (eventually), France (at first, knocked out at the beginning of the war), and other countries
Not joining either side in the war. The US did this at the beginning. Neutrality
Another term for the US staying neutral by refusing to enter WW II on either side at the beginning. Isolationism
Why did American's want to stay neutral? They believed that the war was Europe's problem.
What economic action did the US take that was part of the cause of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor? They stopped selling oil to Japan and it hurt the Japanese economy and military.
What happened on December 7, 1941 The Japanese launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that killed 2,400 people and damaged or destroyed many battleships and airplanes.
What was the affect of the Pearl Harbor attack on US public opinion about the war? It changed from isolationism to a desire to enter the war on the Allied side.
What happened as a result of the US declaring war on Japan on December 8th, 1941? Germany and Italy declared war on the USA.
What is a two front war? A war where a country has to fight in two different areas at the same time.
Who did the US fight in the European Theater of WWII? Germany and Italy
Where was the European Theater of WWII? North Africa and Europe
Who did the US fight in the Pacific Theater of WWII? Japan
Where was the Pacific Theater of WWII? The Pacific Ocean and Asia
Which side did the best at the beginning of the war? The Axis Powers
What did Germany do at the beginning of the war? They conquered most of Western Europe and invaded the Soviet Union (USSR)
What did Japan conquer at the beginning of the war? Eastern China, the East Indies, the Philippines, and many other Pacific Islands
What happened on D Day? About 60,000 allied troops invaded Normandy in France under general Dwight D. Eisenhower.
