circumnavigate To travel around
Columbian Exchange A transfer of people, products, and ideas between the hemispheres.
conquistadors Soldier-adventurers from Spain
Coureurs de bois French term for "runners of the woods"
encomienda Land grants that included the right to demand labor or taxes from Native Americans.
mercantilism System in which colonies existed to make the home country wealthy and powerful.
missions Religious settlements
northwest passage A sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific that passed through or around North America.
peninsular Spanish colonists who had been born in Spain.
plantation Large farms worked by laborers who lived on the property.
province Territorial district of a country.
Quebec Settlement on the banks of the St. Lawrence established by Samuel de Champlain.
strait A narrow passage that connects two large bodies of water.
