Prince Henry- opened school of navigation
Compass- sailors most useful instrument; allowed them to set a course and follow course
Astrolabe- instrument used to measure the angle between the sun or a star and the horizon at a specific time of day or night to help find the latitude
Dead reckoning- a navigation method involving estimating location and speed and then choosing the most likely heading to get you to your destination
Trade winds- belts of consistent winds that greatly aided the explorers to the New World.
Doldrums- an area of calm or light fluctuating winds along the equator
Horse latitudes- area around 30-35 degrees North where the trade winds and prevailing westerlies meet.
Caravel- a ship designed by the Portuguese that was sturdy enough for ocean travel and large enough to carry a good cargo
Bartolomeu Dias- during a storm rounded the tip of Africa without realizing it
Cape of Storms- southern tip of Africa named by Bart. Dias
Cape of Good Hope- the Cape of Storms renamed by King John II
Vasco da Gama- sailed the first Portuguese ship to India; tried to trade goods with them but was rejected.
Christopher Columbus- tried to find new route to the East; landed in the Caribbean
King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella- (Spain) commissioned Chris. Columbus to explore and find new trade route.
Vikings- group from Scandinavian area who explored because they were running out room to live.
Erik the Red- Viking explorer who was banished from Iceland and then discovered and named Greenland
Leif Erikson- son of Erik the Red who explored the Vinland area
Skraelings- Vikings name for the Native Americans
Ferdinand Magellan- his crew was the first to sail around the world; discovered the Strait of Magellan in S. America
Sir Francis Drake- sent out by Queen Eliz.of England to explore & to disrupt Spanish shipping
Francis Xavier- a monk who wrote “Country at War” and described Japan in it
Samurai- Japanese warriors who rode horses and wore armor; sword most imp. Weapon
Seppuku- ceremony where samurai would kill himself to avoid dishonor
Shoguns- strong leaders who united Japan and brought peace through strict laws
Conquistadors- Spanish conquerors sent out to find gold, conquer the people, and convert them to Roman Catholicism
Hernando Cortes- killed the Aztec leader Montezuma, destroyed their city of Tenochtitlan and built Mexico City on this site
Aztecs- group of people in northern Central America; very wealthy with lots of gold
Tenochtitlan- Aztecs capital city; unique because built in the middle of a lake
Montezuma- Aztec leader who Cortes asked for gold
Olmecs- group of native Americans who lived before the Aztecs
Toltecs- group of native Americans who lived after the Omecs
Mayas- group of native Americans who lived in Central America; used pyramids for Temples
Francisco Pizarro- conquered the Incan empire; was amazed at the buildings covered in Gold
Cuzco- Inca’s capital city; buildings covered in gold
Early Portuguese explorers sailing in caravels used a compass to find direction and an astrolabe to find latitude.
The conquistador Hernando Cortes conquered the Aztecs in Mexico.
Francisco Pizarro conquered the Incas in Peru
Bartolomeu Dias Portuguese explorer who traveled around the tip of Africa
Francis Xavier monk who traveled in Japan and wrote about it
seppuku suicide ceremony in Japan
Tenochtitlan Aztec capital, an island city that would later be the site of Mexico City
Drake- one of Queen Elizabeth’s sea dogs who sailed around the world after Magellan
Da Gama- the captain of the first ship to sail around Africa to India
Columbus- discovered the New World while traveling for King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella of Spain
Magellan- the first man to captain a ship that sailed around the world.

Montezuma Aztec ruler
shogun Japanese ruler
Prince Henry Portuguese ruler
Ferdinand and Isabella sent Columbus from Spain to find China by sailing west.
From Portugal – Dias sailed around Africa.
Vasco da Gama was the first on e from Portugal or Europe to sail to India.
Cortes discovered the Aztecs in the area than is now Mexico
Xavier wrote to Europe about the land of Japan
The Inca empire stretched along the land of Andes in Peru
Sailing for England (Queen Elizabeth I) Drake traveled around the world
Columbus thought he had landed in China, but was really in the Americas or the Caribbean.
