Where did most ancient Egyptians live? In the delta area of the Nile River.
What are cataracts? Waterfalls.
Where does the Nile River flow? The Nile River flows 4,145 miles north, from the mountains of central Africa to the Mediterranean Sea (the last 600 miles is in Egypt).
Why did the Egyptians have an advantage over the people of other river-valley civilizations? The flood waters from the Nile River left behind large amounts of rich soil in about the middle of July every year, good for growing crops.
What are basins? What are they used for? Bowl-shaped holes; they're used to store water for growing crops.
What are shadoofs? What are they used for? A machine the Egyptians used to lift water from the Nile to the basins.
What kingdoms was Egypt made up of at first? Egypt was made up of two kingdoms; Upper Egypt, which lay in southern part of Nile River valley; Lower Egypt, which lay in northern delta.
Who conquered Lower Egypt and united the kingdoms? When did this happen? Narmer (Menes), in about 3100 BC.
What was the name of the capital that Narmer set up on the border between Upper and Lower Egypt? Memphis.
About when did the Old Kingdom begin? How long did it last? About 2600 BC; it lasted nearly 500 years.
