Ancient History

Global Vocabulary Unit 1

TermDefinition
prehistory Period of time before mankind invented writing.
anthropology The study of human societies and cultures and their development.
archaeology The study and analysis of artifacts and other physical remains.
primary source An artifact, document, diary, manuscript, autobiography, recording or any other source of information that was created at the time. A first-hand or original source of information.
secondary source A source of information that analyzes or interprets other sources of information by someone who did not experience the event first-hand.
artifact A human made object, such as a tool, weapon, or piece of jewelry.
culture A people's' unique way of life, as shown by its tools, customs, arts, and ideas.
Customs and traditions Rules of behavior. Set of unwritten practices passed down from generation to generation.
Cultural diffusion The spreading of ideas or products from one culture to another.
Culture shock The feeling of disorientation experienced by someone who is suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes.
Ethnocentrism The belief and/or attitude that one's culture is superior to others.
Command Economy an economic system where the government determines what goods will be produced, how much will be produced and the price of goods, usually found in Communist governments.
Traditional Economy an economic system in which traditions and customs shape the type of goods produced and are usually based on farming
Market Economy an economic system in which the decisions regarding supply and demand are determined by the citizens and businesses.
Interdependence the mutual dependence of two or more civilizations on each other
nomads people who do not have permanent homes and travel in search of the food that they hunt and gather
migrate to move from one region or habitat to another
Paleolithic Age/Old Stone Age time period that began about 2 million years ago, when people used simple tools and were nomadic
Neolithic Age/New Stone Age time period beginning around 8,000 BC characterized by the development of agriculture and the beginning of permanent civilizations
domestication the process of taming animals to use as pets or for work animals
subsistence farming growing enough food just enough to feed your own family or small community or village
