| prehistory | Period of time before mankind invented writing. |
| anthropology | The study of human societies and cultures and their development. |
| archaeology | The study and analysis of artifacts and other physical remains. |
| primary source | An artifact, document, diary, manuscript, autobiography, recording or any other source of information that was created at the time. A first-hand or original source of information. |
| secondary source | A source of information that analyzes or interprets other sources of information by someone who did not experience the event first-hand. |
| artifact | A human made object, such as a tool, weapon, or piece of jewelry. |
| culture | A people's' unique way of life, as shown by its tools, customs, arts, and ideas. |
| Customs and traditions | Rules of behavior. Set of unwritten practices passed down from generation to generation. |
| Cultural diffusion | The spreading of ideas or products from one culture to another. |
| Culture shock | The feeling of disorientation experienced by someone who is suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture, way of life, or set of attitudes. |
| Ethnocentrism | The belief and/or attitude that one's culture is superior to others. |
| Command Economy | an economic system where the government determines what goods will be produced, how much will be produced and the price of goods, usually found in Communist governments. |
| Traditional Economy | an economic system in which traditions and customs shape the type of goods produced and are usually based on farming |
| Market Economy | an economic system in which the decisions regarding supply and demand are determined by the citizens and businesses. |
| Interdependence | the mutual dependence of two or more civilizations on each other |
| nomads | people who do not have permanent homes and travel in search of the food that they hunt and gather |
| migrate | to move from one region or habitat to another |
| Paleolithic Age/Old Stone Age | time period that began about 2 million years ago, when people used simple tools and were nomadic |
| Neolithic Age/New Stone Age | time period beginning around 8,000 BC characterized by the development of agriculture and the beginning of permanent civilizations |
| domestication | the process of taming animals to use as pets or for work animals |
| subsistence farming | growing enough food just enough to feed your own family or small community or village |
