The problems the introduction of machines placed on society

| Was the working environment safe or dangerous? | Very dangerous. For example, unlike today their weren't any safety guards on the machines to protect the workers. Therefore at least one injury at some points likely + poorly ventilated = respiratory problems. Early machines made of wood huge fire risk. |
| How many hours did workers have to work in a shift? What days? | Shifts were usually 12 hrs long and sometimes longer. Workers worked 6 days a week. |
| Briefly explain the difference in the style of how people worked in the factories compared to in the domestic system. | Lots of flexibility of how and when workers did the labour. In the factories workers were forced to work to a strict timetable. No slacking. |
| What type of person was employed in a cotton factory? | Employers mainly employed Children and Women. This is because they were cheaper to employ then men were for doing the equivalent role. As much as 20% of workforce were children. Women and children were easier to discipline than men as well. |
| Did workers receive an allowance if they were off sick? | No. Such a thing did not exist in those days. |
| Name a job that children did. | Chimney sweeping. |
| How did the Factory system affect the Domestic system? | There was a decline in Merchants trading with labourers from the domestic system because they weren't producing as much as the workers in the factories did. Merchants made more money from the factories. Workers were forced to adapt to earn more money. |
