Midterm Study Guide for Winter 2009: Part 3

QuestionAnswer
Who is Mussolini? A fascist leader of Italy who was an ally of Hitler.
What is a nation? A community of people within a defined land and under one government.
What is a nation-state? A state that runs itself and has people of the same culture, language and history.
What are natural resources? Things that comes from nature that people do not create.
What is nazism? A belief that the Germans are superior to anyone else and that the government has total control of its people. This was lead by Hitler.
What is New Economic Policy? Lenin's policy (NEP)allowing farmers to sell their own food and hire people.
What is the Paris Peace Conference? A gathering of European countries, Russia and the US in Paris after WWI to agree on what to do next, esp. with Germany.
What is Parliamentary Democracy? A government where the legislature (parliament) decides the head of the government (prime minister). But the prime minister doesn't have as much power as our president.
What is pastoral? Relates to shepherds, cattle owners.
What is philosophy? Understanding how people think. Understanding what people think is important in life.
What is presidential democracy? A government where a president is separate from other groups in the government and has his own power/duties.
Who is Rasputin? An advisor to Alexandra (wife of Russian czar, Nicholas) who was able to influence her decisions. He was only a peasant who couldn't read.
What is Reichstag? Part of the german legislature (congress) who are elected.
What is religion? A belief and worship of a supernatural being (God) or other force.
What is the Russian Civil War? A war in Russia under Lenin between the communists and those loyal to the government (the government was led by the czar). This led to communism.
What is the Russian Revolution? A revolt led by Lenin and his followers (Bolsheviks/communists) to overthrow the Russian government
What is science? Knowledge gained by experimenting, observing the physical world.
What is social science? A science dealing with human society and how humans work together.
What is sovereignty? Somebody or some people with great power.
What is the Soviet Union? A country created by Lenin by combining different people from different lands.
Who was Stalin? A leader in the Soviet Union after Lenin. Very mean (killed millions). He tried to make people work better and faster than US and Europe but didn't succeed.
What is a state? A group of people organized to govern themselves.
What is "supply and demand"? A belief that when prices goes up, people buy less; when prices go down, people buy more. People's demand affects the supply.
What is a submarine? A vessel that can float above water and submerge below water. Used by Germans in WWI.
What is the "Theory of Relativity? Albert Einstein's theory that space and time are related.
What is the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk? A treaty signed between Russian (Lenin) and Germany that ended Russian participation in WWI.
What is trench warfare? A way of fighting by building trenches (ditches) in the ground to fight from.
What is the Triple Alliance? An agreement before WWI among Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary to protect each other
What is the Triple Entente? An agreement between Great Britain, Russia and France to oppose the Triple Alliance.
What is a unitary government? A government where the central government has control of all levels of government.
What is the Weimar Republic? The german government created after WWI that was parliamentary (representative).
What is World War I Started in 1914 that involved most of Europe, Russia and US but also expanded to Japan, Middle East, India, Austrialia.
