Midterm Study Guide for Winter 2009: Part 2

What is Alsace-Lorraine? Land between Germany and France that the French recovered after WWI.
What is an artifact? Something created by humans.
What is Axis-Powers? An alliance between Japan, Italy and Germany in WWII.
Who is the Bolshevik Revolution? A group of Russians, Bolsheviks, led by Lenin overthrew the government in 1917. This began the growth of communism in Russia.
What is Cubism? Art with odd shapes that don't look real.
What is the executive branch? The part of government that carries out (executes) the laws.
What is the legislative branch? The part of government that creates and changes (legislates)laws.
What is the judicial branch? The part of government that hands out justice.
What are the Five Year Plans? Stalin's plans for Russia to build more, farm more and make more in 5 years.
Who is Sigmund Freud? A Austrian doctor that studied the mind and mental illness.
What is geography? A science that deals with the earth's surface. Think of GEOLOGY.
What is the Great Depression? A time when many jobs are lost, businesses close, food is scarce, the economy suffers.
What is historical method? This is the way historians study facts and evidence to explain the past.
What is history? Events of the past.
Who is Hitler? A german leader who wanted to build a new national Germany that killed Jews. Hitler wanted to expand across Europe.
What is the Holocaust? The killing of 6 million Jews by Hitler.
What is a hunter/gatherer? Nomads that hunted and gathered food as groups of people.
What is industrialism? A group of people or country where industries or manufacturing are very large and most important.
What is the Industrial Revolution? A time in history when producing or farming changed from simple hand tools to complex machines.
What is Kellogg-Briand? An agreement by European countries in 1928 after WWI where they said they would never go to war.
What is Kristallnacht? In 1938, germans destroyed Jewish homes and buildings and beat Jews as told to by Hitler.
What are League of Nations? A group of 40 nations after WWI that agreed to promote peace, not war and also agreed to work together to fight any bad country.
Who is Lenin? A revolutionary in Russia who led the Bolsheviks to overthrow the government and start communism.
What are the Locarno treaties? An agreement by 7 european nations after WWI that defined the borders with Germany and promoted peace.
