Midterm Study Guide for Winter 2009: Part 1

QuestionAnswer
What is aristocracy? Government ruled by the rich or upper class. The aristocrats.
What is an autocracy? Government ruled by ONE person who has total control over everyone. AUTO means self (me). Think of automobile that moves itSELF.
What is capitalism? An economic system where people own their own business and their goal is to make a profit for themselves.
What is alliance? An agreement between 2 or more nations to work together to protect each other. The work ALL (ALLiance)together.
What is collectivization? Combining farmland and people to improve efficiency (they farm faster, produce more, cost less). Everything is COLLECTed.
What is command economy? A system where the government runs business, banks. The government COMMANDS the economy just like you would command Yensi to listen.
What is communism? It is a type of socialism where there are no rich and poor people; everyone gets a fair share of money and property.
What is constitution? A document or bunch of documents that tells the government what it can do and it and also lays out the laws.
What is democracy? Government where the people have a say in the way the power and laws are divided and defined.
What is dictatorship A government where the ruler has all power (like God). He DICTATES everything.
What is directed democracy? A government where the people participate in the daily running of the government. They DIRECT their power themselves.
What is Duma? The elected national legislature in Russia. This is like our Congress.
What is federal government? A government where the power is divided between the central federal government and the local or state government.
What is inflation? A change in the economy when prices go up very very quickly. Example: when the price you pay for a helium balloon INFLATES from $0.99 to $2.00 very very quickly.
What is militarism? Falling in love with the military; glorifying the military like you would glorify you favorite singer: SWIFTism or PAISLYism.
What is monarchy? Government where the queen or king rules.
What is monotheism? Belief in ONE God (mono means ONE).
What is nationalism? Having alot of pride in a person's own country. Being devoted to one's own country or NATION.
What is nomad? A person who moves from place to place to find food for themselves or their animals.
What is oligarchy? A government where the power belongs to only a few people.
What is polytheism? Belief in many gods. POLY means many.
What is propaganda? Spreading information to tell your story, support your cause, or to damage somebody else's cause. In World War II, the US dropped papers from airplanes to tell Germans they were wrong. Think of the PROPellors on these planes.
What is a representative democracy? Government where the power is kept by the people but elected representatives work in the government to REPRESENT the people's wishes.
What is fascism? Government of one party where people's freedoms are restricted by police, laws, government control of banks, businesses.
What is secularism? Having to do with the world; opposite of focusing on religion.
What is self-determination? The right of people to choose what type of government they want. They DETERMINE the government themSELVES.
What are social classes? Groups that people are placed in based upon their money, who they were born to, color of skin, their religion.
What is totalitarianism? Government where one group of people control government and do not want any other groups involved. The TOTAL government belongs to ONLY this group.
